24 Meanings When you Dream of Running

Dreams about running are often associated with the need to get away from something, someone, or form an imminent danger. In many respects, this is true, and my list of 24 meanings when you dream of running certainly contains these kinds of interpretations.

What Do Dreams About Running Mean?

24 Meanings When you Dream of Running

There is a significant number of dreams about running that are actually positive. Consequently, you do not necessarily have to worry about these kinds of dreams. Plus, even if you are having the scary types, there is usually a straightforward plan of action that can quickly solve any conflict in your dream and your waking life.

1. Running Naked

I started with this one because it used to be a common dream of mine going back more than thirty years. Thankfully, it was a dream that I no longer have, as frankly, it was a little disturbing.

So, what’s it all about?

Most probably, it is about the feeling of being exposed and feeling that there are people around you that might betray you or cause you harm in some way. It demonstrates a lack of trust in some of the people close to you.

It is a warning to be careful of the people closest to you in your life. From personal experience, I can honestly tell you this is a very accurate interpretation.

2. Lots Of People Running In Front Of You

This symbolizes an ingrained fear of being left alone or of people improving their own lives and getting ahead whilst you are left behind. The dream indicates strong insecurities about not being good enough in either your personal or professional relationships.

If you experience this kind of dream, it should serve as a wake-up call and prompt you to adopt a more positive outlook. You should strive to work on yourself to become more social and to give people a better impression of you as a person.

3. Running Towards Something Or Someone

Next on this list of the Meanings When you Dream of Running is running toward someone or something. This is a much more positive dream than the last one.

Most commonly…

It means that you are moving towards a goal that you have possibly been focused on for some time. It shows that ambitions and achievements are all within grasp in the near foreseeable future. Also, it shows that you have made, and are continuing to make, solid choices in your life that are likely to end with a successful outcome.

On the flip side, though less commonly, it can mean that you have become too focused on a person or group of people. This could be to the point that you have become over-dependent on them. It may or may not be a bad thing, but it is a nudge to carefully consider the motives and trustworthiness of the person or group.

4. Running And Hiding From Someone

This is one of the most common dreams about running. If you dream about this, it is most likely that you are suffering from high levels of stress. It is also likely that you are not dealing with the stress particularly well. The dream is fundamentally rooted in our fight-or-flight response to dangerous or difficult situations.

In this instance, it is all about flight or, rather, hiding. You are therefore burying your head in the sand and not confronting the problem or problems you have head-on. If you have this dream, you need to address your issues and find better stress-coping mechanisms.

5. Running Away From Danger

This dream is potentially another response to a difficult or stressful situation. However, more specifically, dreaming about running away from danger can also mean that rather than just the stress of your current position, you are more focused on the end result and ultimate failure.

It shows your insecurities about the possible outcomes of your current direction in life. It can also indicate that there are actually real dangers in your chosen course and that you should be very aware of their possible impact.

More positively…

The dream can, though less likely, mean you are within the grasp of some kind of meaningful win or victory. Possibly the successful conclusion of a business deal, promotion, or even the cementing of a personal relationship with someone close.

6. Running With Other People

Running with other people is a good dream to have because it shows you are likely to succeed in whatever you are doing. It means that you have the ability to see out the tasks you undertake. It shows a strong spirit and ability to be competitive even under difficult circumstances.

These kinds of dreams are a good indication that you want to prove yourself to other people. You are the kind of person who is willing to work and cooperate with others to achieve a common goal.

Sounds good, right?

If you have this dream, then treat it as an omen, and don’t be over-critical of yourself. This is specifically related to carrying out group projects and tasks involving multiple people.

7. Chasing Something Or Someone

This means that you are working towards a goal that could be either work or relationship-related. You might be looking to complete a project or alternatively trying to get closer to a friend or possibly a potential or current sexual partner. This could be either a good or bad dream depending on your current circumstances.

If you are methodically working towards something, then it is definitely a positive. However, you should be aware that this dream might signify that you have a compulsion towards some end that is unhealthy and needs addressing.

Feeling rejected?

If you are not able to reach the object or person, it might also be the sign of a deeper routed fear of rejection you have in your waking life. Alternatively, if you reach the thing in your dream, it shows an open invitation and a positive mindset associated with openness and success.

8. Running with No Effort

This is happily one of my more recent and common dreams. It denotes a person who never gives up on what is important to them and their families and the important people in their life. The person is acutely aware that everything they want and desire can be theirs if they persist and never give up on their dream and goals.

If you frequently dream about running along a beautiful beach, it can mean that the fulfillment of these dreams is very close at hand. Alternatively, dreams where you feel like you are gliding across the ground or floating on air as you run show that you have developed new strategies and ways of thinking to overcome barriers and obstacles. This last part is definitely me!

9. Running From Your Shadow

This is another dream that points to large levels of stress and avoidance of the problems and difficulties in your life. Additionally, it is a warning that the current challenges have become entrenched and will not disappear without an action plan and some effort on your part.

It is not a great dream and should wake you up (pardon the pun!) to the fact that not only won’t this go away but that without some kind of strategy, things will only get worse. The message is very clear that it should not be ignored, as this will only lead to further stress, which will continue to feed and grow into a vicious cycle.

10. Running Either Slow Or Fast

The speed of your run when dreaming is a sign of how quickly you feel the pace of your life is moving. When the speed is slow, it means that you are possibly in a rut or you are feeling depressed. It could also mean that you are trying to slow down in order to make sense of what is going on.

Conversely, dreaming about running quickly could be a symptom of your life flashing by with you having little control over its direction. It could be an indication that you need to slow down and take stock of what is going on. It could also relate to a fear of death and a fear of your mortality.

11. Running In A Long Distance Race

Running in a long-distance race shows a high level of awareness of what’s going on in your life. It can signify that you are in a highly competitive environment but that you are very much up to the task. You are aware of the challenges and the people that might be direct competitors either at home or at work.

You can rest in the knowledge that the dream is reassuring you that you are well prepared for the competition. And that you know that deep down, you have the ability to reach your ultimate destination. This is a dream for people with high levels of self-esteem and for people with self-belief.

12. Running Away From Something

Running away from something is a prediction that things are changing in your life and that there will probably be unexpected events in your life in the near future. Alternatively, it could mean that there is a new person in your life who is bringing the changes with them and consequently throwing your life into a state of flux.

The natural response to any change is generally resistance. However, the dream urges you to embrace rather than reject the new world and what is to come. Feel safe that the new experiences will most likely have a positive effect on your life and well-being.

But those aren’t the only meanings…

Another possible explanation of a dream about running away from something is that you feel guilty about either a current thought or a past deed. You cannot bury these emotions, or they will keep coming back to haunt you.

The dream is telling you to let them go and leave the past in the past. In any event, you need to embrace the future.

13. Watching People Running In A Race

This tends to be a very relaxing and satisfying dream. You are likely to be happy and comfortable as you feel that you are now out of the race and you have already beaten off the competition. You will anticipate wealth or a victory coming your way almost immediately.

It is a time when you know success is right there in front of you to enjoy and for your friends and family to enjoy with you.

14. Running From Dangerous Animals

Running from a dangerous animal means that there is someone in your life, or a group of people, that you see as a threat. It could also be an event or even a place that you perceive as unpleasant. Very commonly, this dream of running is a sign that things at work are not going well with either your coworkers or bosses.

For whatever reason, you are not confronting the problems, which are consequently causing the negative feelings to escalate. You have more power than you think, and you have the ability to confront the source of the negativity. If you fail to address the issue, the dreams will likely continue until you do something to resolve the points of conflict.

15. Running In The Dark

Next up on this list of Meanings When you Dream of Running is dreaming of running in the dark. This is another dream that requires action. When your life gets to this point, it is clear that things are not going well, and you need to act. A dream like this is telling you that you are suffering from high levels of anxiety and despair.

You could likely be dwelling on past decisions that have caused a poor outcome in your present life. These have probably made you unhappy and possibly even depressed. You need to take action and begin to formulate a plan of action to form a new path and a better direction.

16. Running Away From A Murderer

Running from a killer is a sign that there is something dangerous or threatening going on in your life. This is highly unlikely to be a direct physical danger. However, in some instances, it could be related to something like poor physical health or a recent troubling diagnosis.

More likely, you are in a difficult family or work situation that, if not resolved properly, could result in a negative outcome. This is going to call you to use all of your skills and experience to satisfactorily resolve things.

17. Running Backwards

Running backward may also be related to physical health. It might be that you are facing some health issues. These might be quite minor, but they might feel like they could build into something much more serious. If you are not already, you should be leading a healthy lifestyle and have any potential health problems properly looked at.

Another interpretation is that you are becoming overwhelmed with your ability to keep others happy. You are constantly putting the wants and needs of others first. You are most happy when everyone around you is happy, too, but the pressure of maintaining this status quo is now beginning to break through.

18. Not Being Abe To Run

You could be in a position of uncertainty where you are at crossroads in your life and are uncertain about how to proceed. It could be any kind of decision that needs to be made that you are reluctant to make. You are in a state of indecision but need to trust in your capabilities.

It is an indication that you lack confidence in your judgment and that you possibly don’t feel you have enough experience or knowledge to move forward. You need to trust in yourself and believe in a positive outcome in order to move on.

19. Running To Exhaustion

This has two possible meanings. The first is that you are currently running around in your life spinning multiple plates. You possibly have several projects in the air, and you are afraid that you will be unable to complete them all.

You are in danger of burning out, so you need to take a step back and prioritize the essential tasks and learn to let go a little. Alternatively, it could just be that you are a natural hard worker, and this is very much the norm in your life. Long days and high levels of stress, with no doubt high levels of reward, are what your life is all about.

20. Running Fast Upstairs

This can be a positive indication that you are progressing quickly in life. It is most likely related to your progression at work, though it could also relate to achieving something like a high level of ability in a particular skill. Such as playing a musical instrument for instance.

You are quickly reaching your important life goals and possibly a higher state of emotional awareness. As good as all this is, though, you should take the time to enjoy the journey and savor the major steps in your life. Focus on the journey and not the destination.

21. Running Fast Downstairs

This has the exact opposite meaning of running quickly upstairs. Running fast downstairs reflects the setbacks you are experiencing. They could be about work, relationships, or both. Whatever the source, it may be that you feel your life is out of control and the series of failures are more serious than they actually are.

In life, we all encounter struggles and barriers. We all get knocked down, and sadly, some more than others. However, success or failure in life is not measured by the number of times you get knocked down but by the number of times you can pick yourself back up. At times, life can feel like it is conspiring against you but be assured that there will be other days, you will get other opportunities, and the better days will come.

22. Running Into Someone or Something

Running into someone or something in a dream often means that you have a series problem. Whatever this is, you need help with it, and you need to find the right person to sort it out. To fix it, you need to find a reliable and trustworthy person.

Alternatively, it might mean you are looking for close friends that you are currently lacking in your waking life. It might also signify that you are searching for a life partner. Either way, it is clear that you are graving close contact. Take heed of this and set in motion a plan to bring more people into your life.

23. Running And Catching Someone

This means that you have a strong determination and will continue to pursue your goals and see your projects through to fruition. You should follow your natural instincts, as your dream is a clear indicator that you are on the right path.

On the other hand, if you are having relationship or communication issues with your significant other, this will have a very different meaning. In this instance, the dream indicates that you are trying to avoid conflict. You need to do the opposite and sit down to talk with the person you are at odds with.

24. Running Away From A Ghost

This is our last dream about running and a very common one. It is a sign of anxiety and a sign that you have an unnatural fear of the unknown. Whilst it is perfectly normal to be apprehensive about change, if you have this dream regularly, it could be an indication that you are worrying unnecessarily about things.

Breaking this cycle in real life is not easy, but not impossible. Try a few basic things first, like walking in a new part of town or on a new trail, watching something different on TV, or making a new recipe. This will hopefully help you to experience a change in a fun and non-threatening way.
